Newborn Care

Newborn Care is provided by our Best Beginnings Team, which is comprised of our Lactation Certified providers who all share a passion for helping newborns thrive. This team will see newborns until their 1-month Well Check, when they will transition to either the Penguin or Dolphin team.

Best Beginnings: Helping you and your baby start off on the right foot

HPC has offered lactation services for over 30 years! Dr. Krupa (retired in 2005) and Dr. Nason partnered in offering lactation consultations and the mother/baby “experience” before the local hospital added this service.

In 2012, we began our “Best Beginnings” program and dedicated Dr. Nan Dahlquist (retired in 2021), to care for all of our newborns in the hospital and for the first visits to our office, regardless of whether the child is breastfed or bottle-fed.

As of Dr. Dahlquist’s retirement, Dr. Beth Mossman has assumed the role of Best Beginnings Director and is joined by other lactation consultants/providers in caring for your baby as well as your lactation needs.

Newborn Appointments

Lactation assistance is provided at the Main Street location. You can expect that your newborn child will be seen there for the first 30 days of life before transitioning to either the Penguin or Dolphin team.

Newborns are to be seen 1-2 days after being discharged from the hospital to check weight, feeding, and for a physical examination. Appointment needs to be attended by the mother; due to the size of our rooms there is space available for one other person to accompany mom.

Our providers do Newborn Rounding’s at OHSU Hillsboro Hospital and Providence St. Vincent’s Hospital. If you plan on delivering your newborn at either of these hospitals, you will need to let the hospital team know (usually in your last trimester of pregnancy) that Hillsboro Pediatric Clinic will be your child’s Pediatric office, and the hospital will contact one of our doctors to come meet your newest addition. Our doctor will notify our schedulers of the birth of your child and we will call you to schedule baby’s first appointment.

If you are planning on delivering at a different hospital, please be aware that newborns are to be seen 1-2 days after discharge please be sure to call us as soon as possible to schedule the first appointment.

While our providers have been handing out newborn registration forms in the hospital for parents and/or guardians to complete ahead of baby’s first appointment, you can always access and complete the newborn registration packet on our website.

Newborn Lactation Services

The Best Beginnings Team offers breastfeeding consultation for patients and their parents at HPC and for other pediatricians in our community. If your child will not be establishing care at HPC but you would like to set up a lactation appointment please call our office for more information. Our Best Beginnings team can help with:

  • Pain and Latching Issues
  • Slow Growth
  • Low Milk Supply
  • Medication Questions
  • Tongue Tie Management
  • Anatomic Issues
  • Back to work and pumping

Please Note!

PLEASE BE AWARE: You must enroll your newborn with your insurance or OHP before they are 30 days old!

Waiting until the last minute could mean your insurance will not cover the newborn from the date of birth. Please call as soon as possible to ensure their insurance coverage.
